The side events 2010

Further to the traditional conference and related events, for the first time in 2010 the Green Med Forum also hosted two side events with the aim, on the one hand, to give practical purpose to the meeting and, on the other, to further expand the international dimension of the event. The two side events were:

  • The 1st Assembly of Assomedmarkets

Assomedmarkets is the Association of Wholesale Market Directors of the Mediterranean region that was launched during the 2009 Forum in Alexandria. Membership to Assomedmarkets is  open to fresh produce exporters national associations, as well as other organizations and institutions which share the common goal to create production and trade integration in the Euro-Mediterranean region. In recent months the Assomedmarkets project has been growing. The founding partners include - besides Green Med - ANDMI (the Italian Association of Wholesale Markets’ Directors) and CAR (Rome agri-food center), where Assomedmarkets’ headquarters are located. Download the Assomedmarkets' profile to know more about the initiative.

  • The 1st international workshop in Europe on cassava

Cassava (manioc, tapioca) is the most important product for the agricultural sector of tropical areas. The workshop, focsuing on agrofood development and marketing projects on cassava, takes place in cooperation with IFAD and other international organizations. In this time of cyclical food crises, rising prices, alarming growth of world hunger (100 million more starving people each year, according to FAO), a more appropriate use of such a agricultural commodity - which is second in the world only to rice and cereals but is almost unknown outside tropical countries - could be a contribution of utmost importance. (In the framework of the Green Med project, extending to Africa the food and farming expertise that has been developed in the Mediterranean region is considered an important card which can be played for the development of Africa and the Mediterranean itself).
